Worksop: Over 200,00 visitors to town library prove its a success, council bosses say

Between November 2013 and November 2014, exactly 207,000 people used the services on Memorial Avenue.

In a 12-month period before the the £8.4m investment opened in 2011, the library recorded visitors of 124,723 - an increase of 80,000.

A number of high profile figures have also praised the running of other modern library facilities across Notts.

Coun John Knight, committee chairman for culture, at Notts County Council, said: “We have had a huge number of exciting and enjoyable events in our libraries once again this year and are committed to our vision of libraries as modern, cultural, community and information hubs.”

“It is encouraging to receive endorsements from John McGovern and Amy Thompson who have seen at first hand the great work and investment in our libraries.”

As part of the county council’s recent budget announcement, the local authority says it is continuing to deliver its library and archive service while still aiming to make £1m in general revenue savings by 2016/17 to contribute to the budget challenge it faces due to Government cuts.

There have been investments in the last five years at Worksop Library, West Bridgford Library and Mansfield Library with each attracting thousands more visitors through the door following the completion of work projects.

There have been a number of other modernisation programmes taking place in other libraries in the county too – all around the principle of the county council recognising the value of libraries to our communities.

National children’s TV presenter Amy from Channel Five’s Milkshake! attended a craft workshop and reading event for children.

She said: “I think libraries are so important for the community. I grew up going to the library all the time when I was little and my first paid job was in a library so I am passionate about libraries.”
