Worksop: Outwood Academy Portland teen up for top award

Not only does Aimee Wilcox, 16, of St Marks Close, raise money for the charity, but she also provides advice and support for her friends.

Aimee, who was nominated by her school teacher Jane Pickersgill of Outwood Academy Portland, lost her nan to bowel cancer in 2012 and has been taking part in the Race For Life every since to help raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Now she has been nominated for the Bakkavor Desserts Young People of the Year awards (YOPEY).

Jane said: “Aimee is a very caring and supportive student and is a positive role model to all students, a very selfless person, I feel that she is more than worthy of my nomination.”

The teenager has just finished her GCSEs and her passion for helping others has led to her wanting to be a paramedic, professional carer or a primary school teacher.

She said: “I like to work hard in everything I do, from studying to raising money for school events and Race For Life.”

“I have done Race For Life twice, I enjoy doing it and it is for a great cause, Cancer research UK.”

“Next year I want to do the Pretty Muddy because it looks really fun.”

There is £2,000 in prize money including a top prize of £800 to be won.

The young person or group will keep the £400 and give £400 to a good cause of their choice.
