Worksop: Old Market Square preparing to host Lights Out event to honour World War One victims

A veteran holds a candle to promote the Lights Out campaign which will be marked in Fleetwood.

The Royal British Legion is inviting everyone to participate in the event which will be held at the Old Market Square on Monday 4th August.

The event is part of a nationwide candle lit vigil that embodies the words of Sir Edward Grey at the time Great British troops were about to go to war.

Grey, the Foreign Secretary at the time of the start of the First World War in 1914, was attributed with saying. “The Lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time”

Commencing at 10.00pm, the event will be opened by Councillor Gill Freeman, Chairman of Bassetlaw District Council, whilst there will also be readings and a community sing along of First World War songs accompanied by Worksop Miners Welfare Band.

Prayers and a blessing will be lead by Father Spicer and everyone participating will be invited to turn out their lamps by the Chairman of Bassetlaw, leaving just one lit at the end to symbolise a beacon of hope.

Lights out is also considered to be the start of what will be a four year long commemoration for the soldiers that sacrificed their lives for our future.
