Worksop: New plans for Tesco site considered

The site of what was set to be a new Tesco in town could now be developed for retail, residential or leisure uses or for a discount foodstore.

The Guardian can reveal that Reesdenton Chartered Surveyors are advertising the land at the junction of Carlton Road and Blyth Road for sale on behalf of the supermarket giant.

Tesco bosses say that they have received interest from potential purchasers - but leader of Bassetlaw Council, Simon Greaves, has said that it is a ‘shame’ that they have not contacted the authority about exactly what their plans are for the site.

“I do hope that Tesco agents will be good enough to get in touch with the authority to discuss what their plans really are,” Coun Greaves said.

“It is a shame that Tesco have not been in contact with us about what their plans are.”

“I have always been of the view that this was the worst location imaginable for a supermarket site.”

“The site needs to be developed, there is no way the site can continue the way it is.”

Tesco bosses confirmed to the Guardian that they have advertised the land for sale and that they are considering all offers for the site and will provide an update when they are able to.

Spokesman Mark Thomas said: “We want to ensure that our site in Worksop has a positive future in the town.”

“In the meantime, we continue to make sure the land is maintained and have recently carried out a full clearance of the site to ensure we carry on being a good neighbour in Worksop.”

Coun Greaves added: “I think that whatever proposals Tesco has for the future we need to work together, but it has to be the right type of development for the area.”

“The money is the primary driver and I suspect that Tesco have been told to get back as much money as possible.”
