Worksop: New bus station takes shape ahead of August opening

The Guardian were recently allowed on the site of the interchange which is to be built at the junction of Newcastle Street and Watson Road.

This newspaper was joined by Notts County Council’s project manager Paul Horn and coun Kevin Greaves, chair of transport and highways.

Builders in hard hats and hi viz vets have been working on putting up the steel frame of the structure in recent months.

Work is now being carried out on the roof which will include solar cells before the curved walls are put in place.

Internal work on the office, canteen and waiting area will then begin.

“I think it is absolutely brilliant,” coun Greaves said.

“For Worksop this is a fantastic building that is under construction now.”

“There was a lot of negativity at first, it is a long-awaited project, I collected nearly 10,000 signatures for a petition for a Worksop bus station, a lot of people said it didn’t make much difference it wouldn’t happen, but it just goes to show that it will and it has.”

“I was determined that Worksop got its bus station and here we are with it opening in August.”

The new bus station will use design elements previously seen at other recently opened council bus stations such as Retford, Newark and Mansfield.

The design features a staffed information point, toilets, seating, electronic information screens and CCTV.

Eight bus bays will cater not only for existing demand in the town but also allow for future growth.

Mr Horn said: “The steel frame is pretty much up now, we are now just working on the roof.”

“The glazing will then start to go in and the shape of the walls will begin.”

“It is pretty exciting now and only a few months to go.”
