Worksop: Men in Sheds project will open in the town next month

Age UK are starting up their Men in Sheds project in Worksop

Men in Sheds is a new scheme that will be officially launching on Thursday, 12th of June between 12pm and 2pm at Kilton Terrace on Kilton Road in Worksop.

Men in Sheds is an innovative project that supports older men who want to get together to share and learn new wood-working skills and subsequently form friendships.

Following the launch, workshops will run every morning and afternoon on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and will cost £1.50 per session.

The new Worksop Men in Sheds project follows two successful predecessors that ran in Nottingham and Blidworth.

Age UK Notts provides a workshop with appropriate tools and equipment, a co-ordinator, and trained volunteers to ensure the ‘shed’ is a welcoming, safe, supportive space for men to enjoy.

Shed members are very much involved in the development of the shed and choose the activities they want to participate in and what products should be made to sell or take home.

Shed members come from a wide variety of backgrounds ranging from highly skilled joiners and wood turners to complete beginners.

Whatever the level of expertise, there is a role in the shed for everyone.

Nicky Wheddon, project manager of Men in Sheds at Age UK Notts, said “I’m so delighted to be opening another shed.”

“There are plenty of different schemes for people in later life, but they often appeal mainly to women and men can feel left out.”

“A project like this engages men in later life and offers the chance to share their skills and make new friends – or just have a cup of tea and a chat.”

Age UK in Notts aims to enhance the quality of life and promote the well-being of all older people in the City and County.

The group is the largest local independent charity providing direct services to older people from all communities and backgrounds.
