Worksop: Medical Centre keen to get hands on land

The land in question is the area on the junction of Bridge Street and Newgate Street where some old public toilets were recently demolished.

And William Delaney, a managing partner at Newgate, says they want to be the ones to puchase the empty land.

“It was suggested that the council had said no-one had expressed an interest in the land but that is not true because we have,” said Mr Delaney.

“We have made previous attempts to get the council to come and meet with us but Simon Greaves, the leader of the council, declined.”

“I’m told the council want around £250,000 for that piece of land which seems a very high amount.”

“We offered £200,000, so only £50,000 off the full asking price, but that was turned down.”

“What frustrates me is that we have our practice there and we want to buy that land and make use of it and the council don’t seem want to sell it to us.”

“So now the land is standing empy again when we could be using it.”

In response, the council denied ever saying it had not received any enquiries for the land.

Coun Greaves said: “Bassetlaw District Council is in discussion with a number of interested parties over the sale of the land.”

“With the new Savoy Cinema having the potential to act as a regeneration anchor point for the top of the town, the council would like to see the land used for an entertainment or food business that could enhance Worksop’s current night time offer.”

“The council did receive an offer for the site but this was under the asking price and we will not sell the council’s assets on the cheap.”
