Worksop: Manton man jailed for driving children to school

William Roe, 26, of Dukeries Crescent admitted driving while disqualified and driving without insurance when he appeared at Worksop Magistrates’ Court.

District judge Diane Baker was told that Roe had been asked to take his friend’s children to school when he was caught by police.

Roe was a known disqualified driver when he was seen driving a BMW on Memorial Avenue on 28th November, last year.

Prosecutor Ruth Snowdin said as Roe parked the car he was arrested by a police officer.

Defence solicitor David Grant said his client has an appalling criminal record in relation to driving.

He described Roe’s actions as ‘irresponsible for a charitable nature.’

The owner of the car had asked Roe to take her children to school as she was unable to, said Mr Grant .

He added that Roe was trying to get himself a job and urged the district judge to give him unpaid work in the community in a bid to motivate him.

Ms Baker jailed Roe for 12 weeks in prison.

She also disqualified him from driving for a year and ordered him to pass a driving test before he is given his licence back.

“Quite clearly you are a young man who knows about court orders and time and time again you breach court orders,” added Ms Baker.

“An immediate custodial sentence is the only option.”
