Worksop: Man who quit his job to help the needy... quits!

An inspirational Worksop man who quit his job to help needy people in the community... has quit!

Johnny Manning, of Watson Road, left his job at Marks & Spencer in April 2014 so he could give something back to the people who needed it most.

But now the 22-year-old, who believes he helped around 500 people in the town and its surrounding areas, has said he is quitting.

“I have not been very well for some time,” he said. It is a massive shame, I have lost a lot of confidence.”

“I counted how many people I have helped and I think it is around 500, I was helping 30 people a week at one point.”

Johnny helped a variety of people - mostly elderly - with their gardening, odd jobs and gave them company by going round for a cup of tea. He covered all areas from Worksop, Manton, Retford and Langold and did not ask for payment.

He told the Guardian that he would never rule out a return to helping people but he said he would need more support.

“I sent an email to John Mann and I got a reply asking for my contact details,” he added. I replied with my number but I never heard anything.”

“If I could turn it in to a job tomorrow I would because I loved it.”

The Guardian contacted Bassetlaw MP John Mann, who said: “I’m very sorry to hear that Johnny is quitting, people like him are diamonds because they are so rare.”

“I was pleased to meet Johnny during this time when he accompanied someone who needed help to my office and I know that he made a difference to many people’s lives.”
