A 26-year-old man took his shoes off so he did not ‘dirty the sofa’ as he burgled his own sister’s home so he could buy drugs.

Nick Milnthorpe, of Winifred Street, Rhodesia, Worksop, pleaded guilty to burglary dwelling and theft at Worksop Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that Milnthorpe entered the address by an insecure ground floor window at around 11.45am on 22nd August after drinking a litre of cider.

Prosecuting, Ruth Snowdin, said: “The defendant was seen by the next door neighbour from her first floor window.”

“He said he took his shoes off so that he did not dirty the sofa which was below the window.”

“He knew his sister had gone out and stole £10 to buy drugs.”

“He went over to a tin which was on a table and took the money. He said it contained more than £10 more did not take it.”

“He felt terrible about what happened and put the money back. No damage was caused to the property.”

“This was his sister. He breached her trust. She is entitled to feel safe in her own home and found it most distressing.”

In mitigation, David Verity, said: “His sister has forgiven him and she is in court today. She was very upset about it. He is determined to sort out his drug problem.”

Milnthorpe was sentenced to a nine-month community order, with a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement. He was also given a four-week curfew between 8pm and 8am, and must pay £40 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
