Worksop man, 75, dies after major crash between Worksop and Blyth

A WORKSOP pensioner has died following a collision on the B6045 near Blyth last weekend in which five people were injured.

Frederick Bower, 75, passed away at Bassetlaw Hospital on Wednesday 19th September - four days after the crash on Saturday 15th September.

Mr Bower was driving a gold Ford Mondeo when it collided with a black Peugeot RCZ coupe at about 8.25pm.

A 37-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Mondeo, was taken to the same hospital where her condition is described as stable.

Three people travelling in the Peugeot, two women and a man, were taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The two women remain in hospital.

Mr Bowers death is the second on the stretch of road between Worksop and Blyth in the past year, after Worksop man Tony Dunn, 31, was killed in a head-on collision on 5th November 2011.

There have been a total of 19 collisions and 28 casualties on the same stretch between 2009 and 2012 - three of them serious.

Chief Inspector Andy Charlton, Force, who leads the force road casualty reduction, reminded motorists to take extra care on the roads - particularly as the darker nights start to set in.

“Blyth Road is not an inherently dangerous stretch of road,” he said.

“If motorists are diligent and conscientious, driving to the conditions of the road, and avoiding the fatal four behaviours of speeding, mobile phone use, lack of seat belts and drink driving, then it is perfectly safe.”

“But some motorists don’t abide by the law and that’s exactly why we are currently running a six-week campaign highlighting the dangers of these ‘Fatal Four’ causes of death and serious injury on our roads.”

Guardian readers have left messages of sympathy on our Facebook site for Mr Bower and his family.

Yvonne Bale wrote: “It’s always the innocent people who get hurt. “

“God bless you Fred and all your family - you were a gentleman.”

Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have seen either vehicle travelling on the road at the time of the collision or prior to the incident.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call Detective Constable Paul Jaycock, from the Crash Investigation Unit, on 101 extension 800 2225 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
