Votes poured in when the competition was launched in the Guardian last October, with pubs across the town vying to be crowned the best watering hole in Worksop.

But it was the Best Western Lion Hotel that finally scooped the award, chosen for its cosy, welcoming interior, exceptional customer service and great food and drink.

Gemma Pitt, manager of The Lion said it was ‘an honour’ to be the Guardian Pub of the Year 2014.

She added: “We are very surprised but delighted to receive the award and want to thank our customers for voting for us.”

“We’ve made some dramatic improvements over the last few years and are so glad that the hard work has paid off. For example, all our food is now freshly made on the premises.”

“We have launched a loyalty card which entitles local customers to 15 per cent off their bill, and we think it’s offers like these that keep people coming back.”

“The pub has been around a long time so is well known in the area, the building itself dates back to 1601!”

“But this is the first time we’ve received the award and we are all very happy about it.”

The Lion Hotel also has 46 ensuite bedrooms and a restuarant that is available for private hire.
