Worksop: John Mann wants improved conditions for Qatar workers ahead of 2022 World Cup

John Mann says it is 'unacceptable' that hundreds of Qatar workers have died due to unsafe conditions

22 MPs from all three major parties have now also backed the motion after reports that at least 455 Indian and 360 Nepalese workers died in Qatar in 2012 and 2013.

Mr Mann said: “Since Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup, it has experienced a construction boom.” Migrant workers, predominantly from India and Nepal, have been brought in to build the infrastructure, hotels and football stadiums that the country needs to host the tournament.”

“It is completely unacceptable that hundreds of those workers have died due to unsafe working conditions.”

“If no action is taken to drastically improve working conditions for migrant workers in Qatar, hundreds or even thousands more will die ahead of the World Cup.”

“I am delighted that MPs from all major parties have backed my parliamentary motion,” he added.

Mr Mann has written a letter to the Qatari Embassy in London requesting an urgent meeting to discuss the issue.

He is yet to receive a response.
