Worksop: Innocent bystander becomes crime victim as he rushes to aid of female during drunken dispute

Greg Rewston, 26, of Sherwood Road, Worksop, pleaded guilty to using threatening and abusive words or behaviour towards the bystander at Worksop Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 16th October.

Ruth Snodin, prosecuting, told the court how a man was driving along Carlton Road on Monday 29th September when he spotted Rewston shouting at a female and grabbing her.

When the man pulled over and shouted at him to stop, Rewston ran over and leaned into the open car window, shouting insults.

Rewston then began throwing punches and the man managed to push him away before driving to a place of safety and calling the police.

Defence solicitor Moira Mcfarlane said: “The offence was born out of the fact that both the defendant and his girlfriend were heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident.”

“The girlfriend wanted to collect their children from relatives, but Rewston wanted to stop her from doing that.”

“This was because he recognised that, as they were both drunk, they were not in a position to provide adequate care for their young children.”

Magistrates sentenced Rewston to a 12 month community order with 12 months supervision.

He was also ordered to completed a drink rehabilitation course, pay £50 compensation to the victim, a £65 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
