Calum Cooper, David Grout and Darrell Crowder each received a Divisional Commander’s Commendation at a special evening in Mansfield.

The trio acted courageously in trying to save the life of a man who fell ill on a barge behind the Priory Shopping Centre last year.

On arrival at the scene, Calum of the Priory Centre, David of Iceland, and former Priory Centre guard Darrell, quickly started CPR until paramedics arrived.

Despite their best efforts, the man tragically passed away due to a heart attack.

Calum said: “It is fantastic to get recognition, it was an honour to receive the award from the police.”

“It was nice to share the experience with my wife.”

“I got a phone call from the gentleman’s son last week who said that he knew we did everything we could to save his dad’s life. That was amazing, that topped everything off for me.”

“We are a small security team and something like this brings us together.”

The County Division Awards evening on Wednesday 22nd April at Mansfield Town Football Club, saw the brave celebrated for their services to the community.

Calum, David and Darrell were handed the gongs by Nottinghamshire Police’s Chief Superintendent, Mark Holland.

David Grout, security guard at Iceland, said: “We have had members of the public come up to us and thank us and they said we had given them some reassurance that if anything did happen then we are there.”

“You don’t expect to have to go to work and try to save someone’s life.”

“My partner and my daughter came to the evening, I was very happy to receive the award.”

Priory Centre manager, David Aunins, said: “It was a great evening and a proud moment seeing Calum accept his commendation. It’s great for Calum to receive recognition like this for the hard work that he does and the bravery that he shows in regularly confronting, often intimidating situations.”
