The injuries are said to be ‘life-altering’ and he may need further operations to ease the pressure on his brain.

Today Daniel’s family have told the Guardian of their heartbreak and how ‘overwhelmed’ they are at the messages of support they have received.

His partner Ruth Ridley, 26, said: “It is heartbreaking, he should have been spending that time with his dad and his children.”

“It was one of the worst feelings I have felt.”

The couple have three children, twins Riley and Reece, aged three, and Jalan, aged nine.

“He was supposed to buy them a trampoline on Saturday,” Ruth said. He was going to take them over to Smyths to buy one. I had already given him his Father’s Day present from the boys which was a new t-shirt and he went out in that.”

Daniel’s dad Steven, 57, said that he ‘feared the worst’ when the police knocked on his door.

“I was just cracking up,” he said.

“He has got a lovely personality, he would help anyone. He has got that cheeky face.”

“He would do anything for his kids.”

The Worksop Timber worker, who has three sisters, had been on a night out when the incident occurred and the police were called at around 3.40am on 20th June.

His best friend, Daniel Solomons, 31, said: “I couldn’t stop crying for a day because of the shock of it all.”

“He is the closest thing I have got to a brother.”
