Garry and Doreen Butt, of Kiveton Park, give up every weekend and one night each week to help teach youngsters the art of angling.

Many of the children at the club have never fished in their lives and are complete beginners.

But with Garry and Doreen’s patient guidance, many have now learnt, and grown to love, the sport.

Doreen and Garry were nominated by Jane Gray, who said: “They are tremendous, they give up their time for nothing, they run the club and they dedicate their time to the children.”

“They pass on their fishing knowledge for free and they buy items for the club for the kids to use.”

“It provides a great thing for kids to do and they make it a hobby they can easily pick up and enjoy.”

Doreen admitted to being very emotional when the Roses were presented and said it was a lovely surprise.

“It’s not the sort of thing that happens to you every day, to have someone come and present you with something like this to say thank you,” she said.

“We run the club each week and the kids say thank you as they are leaving at the end, but that’s all and you never expect anything like this.”

“For us, the real pleasure is seeing these kids develop and learn an enjoyable hobby like fishing.”

“Many of them have no idea how to start when they first come along and its so rewarding to see them develop and pick up the skills they need and enjoying that process.”

“I also think it makes them better young people for when they are older.”

“The type of kids who are with us are not the sort of people who are going to mug and old lady or something like that when they are older and that is just as satisfying for us, knowing that we are turning these children into decent adults.”
