Worksop: Fury over plans to fly Scottish flag over town ahead of referendum

The move by Bassetlaw Council is a nod to the Government’s decision to fly the Scottish flag above No 10 until the referendum takes place in a bid to encourage a ‘No’ vote on Scotland gaining independence.

But some residents have criticised the plans, questioning why the council have not chosen to fly the Union Jack or the England flag instead.

Martin Wolfe wrote: “What right do the council have to represent my thoughts on the referendum? Why not just fly the Union Jack?”

Jason Gibbs wrote: “So you’re not flying the union flag then? You know, in support of the union?”

Emma Fish wrote: “You can bet that the Scots won’t ever be flying the English flag, so why should Worksop fly theirs? Madness!”

Simon Greaves, leader of Bassetlaw Council, has defended the decision to fly the Scottish flag over Worksop ahead of the vote, saying: “During my time as leader of the Bassetlaw Council, I have ensured that the Union Jack has flown proudly over Worksop for a number of causes.”

“These include the Poppy Appeal, Commonwealth Day and also in support of Worksop Town Football Club.”

“Authorities across the country are now flying the Scottish flag before the referendum takes place because it is the right thing to do.”

“The historic union of England and Scotland needs to be preserved, and as a council we too are showing our support for this.”

“Some people may disagree with the decision to fly the Scottish flag in Civic Square, and ultimately the views of the Scottish people must be respected when the decision on independence has been made, but I have spoken to many Worksop residents who agree that Scotland should remain a part of Britain.”

The council are hoping to raise the flag above Civic Square later this week.

The referendum on whether Scotland should be an independent country is due to take place on Thursday 18th September.
