Mark Barnett, 47, of Queen Street, pleaded guilty to theft from a motor vehicle and possessing a Class B drug at Worksop Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 25th September.

Ruth Snodin, prosecuting, told the court how Barnett and his girlfriend had been in a Worksop supermarket at the time of the incident.

Barnett used a brick to smash a car window and stole clothes along with chargers for assorted electronic devices before running off with his partner.

When he was later arrested by police he was searched and also found to be in possession of Class B drug mephadrone.

Snodin added: “The defendant says he has no recollection of the incident as he had been drinking with his girlfriend that day. None of the goods were recovered.”
Defence solicitor Andrew Osbourne said: “Barnett has accepted full responsibilty for his actions and shows remorse for what he has done.”

“This is a man who is already in a great deal of trouble due to his alcohol and drug addictions.”

“To be frank, the defendant is in desperate need of support.”

Magistrates imposed a 12 month community order with 12 month supervision.

Barnett must also complete a six month alcohol treatment course.

He was also ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge along with £85 court costs.

The mephadrone was seized and has since been destroyed.
