Commercial Estates Group (CEG) say the scheme, which will see a new Asda supermarket and a sports facility built at the site, could bring up to 1,000 new jobs to the area.

David Hodgson, of CEG, said: “This decision is fantastic news for Worksop and is vindication of the hard work that Bassetlaw Council and CEG have put in to progress this project.”

“We have now submitted the reserved matters planning application.”

“Ultimately the scheme will create approximately 1,000 new jobs.”

“Asda is committed to delivering a superstore as part of the mixed use development, which also includes land and financial contributions towards a community sports facility.”

The Vesuvius scheme has been in the planning stage for the past five years and a planning inspector recommend planning permission be refused for it after an inquiry.

But Secretary of State for Local Government, Eric Pickles MP, instead found in favour of CEG and has now rubber-stamped the plans.
