Worksop: Council praises town for supporting Christmas lights switch-on

Hundreds of people got into the festive spirit by attending the Christmas lights switch-on in Worksop.

Families and friends lined the streets on Sunday 23rd November to enjoy a traditional brass band, carol singers, musical performances, as well as a fun fair and craft market.

Coun Jo White, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “It was fantastic that so many people came out to support our Christmas lights event, especially the number of children who were thrilled to see Frozen characters Elsa and Anna, who put on a great show.”

“Christmas is a magical time for children and I hope that these popular characters, as well the other attractions such as Santa’s Grotto, carol singers, bands and the fireworks, helped to get everyone into the festive spirit.”

“That was certainly the case for Ellie May Newman who won the chance to switch on the lights.”

“This was also the first time we have held the ‘switch-on’ event on a Sunday and we hope that local businesses and traders benefitted from this extra day of trading.”

“Once we have gathered all the feedback, it’s something that we will be seriously considering again for next year.”

Excited children counted down the switch-on which included artificial snow being released from a machine and fireworks being let off into the night sky.

A festive market selling traditional gifts and continental foods featured in the town centre on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th.

Chairman of the council, coun Gill Freeman, said: “I’d like to thank Bassetlaw residents for braving the weather and turning out for what was a very special event.”

“I would also like to thank the children from Gateford Park School, Worksop Miners Welfare Band and Father Spicer for creating that essential Christmas spirit.”

“It was fantastic to see everyone singing along, especially the children who seemed to know every word to the Disney songs sung by Frozen Characters Elsa and Anna.”
