Worksop: Cooplands fail to pay struggling teen worker after sending her text which reads ‘we don’t have enough money’

A struggling teenage student from Worksop has been left more than £400 out of pocket after Cooplands failed to pay her the wages she earned during her summer job there.

Kate Twynham was shocked to receive a text message from her manager stating that the company had ‘run out of money’ and that her £425.60 wages would be delayed.

The 19-year-old student, who has since returned to university, completed work at the Cooplands store at Celtic Point. She said she also received a letter from the firm advising her to call a telephone number for more information which ‘kept going straight to answerphone.’

Kate’s Dad Gary Twynham, who contacted the Guardian on Kate’s behalf, said: “We are currently in the process of obtaining legal advice on our best course of action.

“My daughter has been in touch with a number of colleagues and it appears that those who are still working are being paid while others like herself who are now back at university have not been.

“If Cooplands are still trading, they should be paying all the salaries owed and not applying some sort of selection criteria as to who gets paid and who does not. I find this a despicable act on part of Cooplands.”

“They should also be offering more support and information over this issue.”

More than 300 jobs have been lost at Cooplands since the firm went into adminsitration in February of this year.

The company’s Worksop store on Bridge Street was closed as a result of the firm’s struggles, along with 39 other retail outlets across the region.

It is understood that the Cooplands outlet located at Celtic Point in Worksop is still trading.

The Guardian contacted the company’s head office several times for more information on how the matter of Kate’s unpaid wages will be resolved, but are so far yet to receive a response from their staff.
