Worksop: College students scale volcanoes and trek through rainforest

In total 25 students and five adults set off in July for a 30-day trip in South America.

The World Challenge organisation offers young people the chance to explore the world and different cultures and develop valuable life skills.

Helen Platt-Hawkins, one of the expedition leaders, said: “After a long day travelling from Nicaragua to Costa Rica, the team spent a few days in Monteverde, exploring the cloud forest, where there is variety of exotic flora and fauna.”

“On the outskirts of San Hose the team also embarked on a day of white water rafting.”

She added: “One of the most rewarding activities on the challenge was the project phase. In a remote mountainous region of Costa Rica called BriBri, students worked with the staff at the school, repairing large holes in the classroom floors and painting the kindergarten inside and out, decorating the exterior with a colourful rainbow and butterflies.”

Year 11 student, Millie Marriott, said: “There was a lot of nervous anticipation as well as excitement before we set off but it was truly a fantastic opportunity and experience. We visited places and saw sights which we would never have imagined experiencing.”
