The animals, said to be Staffordshire Bull Terrier-type dogs, set upon the house cat, called Oscar, at around 4.30am on Tuesday.

Oscar’s owner, Hazel Rimmington, of Waverley Place, described being woken by ‘awful screaming’ outside her window.

“The dogs were on the cat. I shouted for them to get off and even threw some water out of the window but they didn’t stop,” said Hazel, 40.

“The dogs were in my neighbour’s garden, off their leads. A woman who I assume was their owner, was stood watching them.”

“I was screaming at her to get them off my cat. She just replied ‘What do you want me to do about it? I didn’t mean it to happen’.”

Hazel’s 15-year-old daughter Brë ran outside to pull the animals apart, but was bitten on the hand by one of the dogs.

Said Hazel: “She brought Oscar in and we were trying to find numbers for vets, but he died in my arms.”

“I’m devastated. He was my baby. We were very close.”

• The police have been informed. Anyone with information on the dogs or their owner should call 101.
