Worksop: Campaign warning againsts the dangers of loan sharks has been launched

The England Illegal Money Lending Team in partnership with Notts County Council and A1 Housing will be out and about in the Manton Estate in Worksop to raise awareness of the dangers of loan sharks.

Through the campaign they aim to encourage people to turn away from loan sharks and to report the crime if they have been a victim.

An estimated 310,000 households across the country are in debt to a loan shark.

The Team’s mascot Stan the Shark will be out and about in the community throughout September and posters, banners, leaflets and beer mats displaying the 0300 555 2222 hotline number for reporting loan sharks will be distributed throughout the community.

They will also visit groups at Manton Children’s Centre offering information and advice.

Bernard Coleman, Managing Director of A1 Housing, said:“A1 Housing is backing this campaign and urging tenants and residents in Bassetlaw to turn away from illegal money lenders.”

“We would like tenants who have been affected by this harmful practice to know that help is out there in the form of A1 Housing’s Money Advisors and the confidential hotline provided by the England Illegal Money Lending Team.”

“We would also urge tenants to attend one of the events that will be offered, visit the website or Facebook page, or call the hotline where they can report avoid ruthless and illegal lenders.”

Cabinet Member for Customer and Support Services, Coun Sylvia May, said: “We understand that making it from one payday to the next can be extremely difficult at times, but we would urge Bassetlaw residents not to turn to illegal loan sharks in a bid to solve their financial difficulties.”

“Taking money from a loan shark can lead to greater debts and victimisation. If you are struggling to find the money for essentials or emergencies, you can seek help and advice from Bassetlaw Council, A1 Housing, CAB or 2Shires Credit Union who can offer a sustainable solution.”
