Worksop: Campaign meeting highlights residents’ fears over incinerator plans

Worksop Against Incineration is unhappy at plans for a new incinerator to built at a site on Shireoaks Road.

Concerns were raised over the possible effect of emissions on human health, land, allotments, crops and wildlife.

A spokesman for the group said: “We have 51,000 people living in Worksop and most of them will be downwind, less than two miles from the proposed site.”

“There will be a detrimental effect to the area’s image and environmental issues involving SINC’s (Sites of Nature Conservation Interest) including a threat to the habitat of slow worms that have a protected status and have colonies on Tranker Wood Marsh, 50 yards north of the proposed incinerator site.”

“There would also be a threat to the Prospective Sherwood Forest Special Protected Area (SPA) set up to protect nightjars and woodlarks.”

“Worksop is within the Prospective SPA.”

Possible effects on the local food industry covering The Lockkeeper pub, McDonald’s, Sainsbury’s, Premier Foods and the proposed Vesuvius development were also discussed.

The proposals will eventually go to Notts County Council for planning permission and the Environment Agency for an environmental permit.

The spokesman added: “Worksop Against Incineration is non-political, It is simply a community-based project with the sole purpose of fighting the proposed waste incinerator in Worksop.”

Worksop Against Incineration are holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday, 15th March 10am to 12noon at Rhodesia Village Hall.

Before that, there will be a petition signing against the plans in Worksop town centre tomorrow morning (Saturday).
