Terry Gilham, founder of the Worksop Falcons Junior Badminton Club, was presented with the Rose in a surprise ceremony on Saturday 20th June at Worksop Leisure Centre.

Since its launch, the club has gone from strength to strength and currently accommodates around 50 children aged 8-18 years old who attend the sessions every Saturday.

Terry’s son Richard is now head coach of the club, with Terry volunteering as chairman.

He and Richard also run sessions on a Monday evening for children that can’t make it to the club on a Saturday, and weekly summer sessions during the school holidays- all on a voluntary basis.

Friend Jane Hamilton, who nominated Terry for the Guardian Rose, said: “My three children have been members of the club for almost two years now and have loved every minute.”

“They were made welcome from day one and have progressed so much as players.”

“More importantly though they have great fun every week!”

“Terry is now in his mid 70s but his enthusiasm and dedication to the club and the children shows no sign of abating.”

Terry’s hard work over the past 20 years has paid off with great results in the league and also the Annual Attewell and Carlton tournaments.

Falcon players have represented, and still are representing, Notts and Derbyshire in the sport and recently a player has won a national tournament.

To mark the club’s 20th birthday, Terry planned a party along with the club’s Annual Generation Tournament where children partner up with family members.

.”Some of these brave adult participants have never even held a racquet before, but Terry always ensures all are welcome and feel included,” Jane added.
