Bassetlaw District Council has received this initial support for the Townscape Heritage project, which will also help them progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date.

The project aims to carry out essential restoration work to the many historic and listed buildings on part of Bridge Street to not only create a more attractive environment but assist in bringing them back into use.

Bassetlaw District Council deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Jo White, said: “This is brilliant news. I am delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given Worksop this support.

“We want to make the town centre Worksop’s beating heart again and the HLF will be working with residents to bring forward the vitally needed improvements and refurbishment.”

The project area is one of Worksop’s most historic and contains some of the town’s most recognisable buildings including the Old Ship Inn and the Lion Hotel.

Heritage Lottery Fund chairman, Sir Peter Luff, said: “Historic town centres are the beating heart of communities, so where they fall into disrepair, the community pays a heavy price.

“Research shows that this can be changed and that even small changes, such as improving shop fronts or restoring architectural features, can make a real difference.

“That’s what the Townscape Heritage scheme does so successfully, providing a boost for economies, with vital employment and training opportunities, start-up spaces for small businesses and enhanced public places for residents and visitors.”
