Worksop: A mum who was wrongly jailed for taking a legal high into prison has been released

Mum of four Sharon Bolton spent 19 days in custody before the mistake was discovered and she was released by a judge.

Bolton, of Mary Street, Rhodesia, Worksop, was sentenced to nine months imprisonment on 18th September after she admitted smuggling the legal high Vodoo in to Lincoln prison during a visit to her former partner.

But after spending nearly three weeks in custody it was discovered Bolton had been charged with an unlawful offence as the substance was not on a list of items banned from jail.

Bolton was returned to Lincoln Crown Court on 7th October where the Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence against her on the charge of taking a legal high in to prison.

She was given a six month conditional discharge by Judge Heath for possessing a small amount of amphetamines for her own use and released from custody.

Bolton said: “When I went back in to court I had no idea I was going to be released.”

Bolton, who has three grandchildren and missed her daughter’s 18th birthday while in custody, is now considering pursuing a claim for compensation.
