Karen Bisset was horrified to discover that a headstone had never been placed at the gravestone of her childhood friend Chris Morris, from Rhodesia, who died two years ago.

The 51-year-old, who is a manager at Harvey’s Fitness on Central Avenue, has been fundraising for a headstone ever since, organising a raffle and taking part in a sponsored diet in order to raise as much money as possible.

The headstone has now been ordered and is due to be placed soon.

Daughter Kirsty Pritchard, who nominated her mum for the acccolade, said: “My mum has always been a very thoughtful, kind and caring person.”

“Chris and my mum went to school together in Rhodesia.”

“He was adopted and didn’t have many relatives, and my mum was upset she she found out his grave was unmarked. She wanted to make sure he was permanently remembered and has raised hundreds of pounds to do this.”

It has not been the first time Karen has raised funds to help others.

Last year, she held a raffle to help her friend, who was suffering from cancer, go on holiday with her family.

“Family and friends from Harvey’s Fitness would like to give something back to my mum for her kind hearted approach over the years,” added Kirsty.

Our Guardian roses are generously donated by Walker’s House of Flowers in the Priory Shopping Centre, Worksop.
