Jade Lane, 21, of Jenkins Avenue, Retford, was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months, after she admitted four charges of false representation and one of perverting the course of justice.

The items ‘stolen’ included an Apple MacBook, a Samsung Galaxy tablet and a Playstation 4.

Nottinghamshire Police were contacted by Lane on the evening of Saturday, September 12, who reported her home had been burgled and named a man she believed to be responsible.

Detectives investigated the burglary and found that Lane had purchased the items from Brighthouse in Retford on a hire purchase agreement, before then visiting the nearby Cex second-hand goods store to sell them on.

Lane sold the Playstation 4 and the Apple MacBook to Cex on the same day she entered into the hire purchase agreement with Brighthouse.

In interview, Lane initially denied deceiving officers but when the weight of evidence - including CCTV showing her receiving payment for the goods in Cex - were shown to her she admitted the offences.

Lane said she committed the offences to pay off a debt. However, she also used some of the money to buy her partner a new tracksuit and trainers.

She added that she has actually lost the Samsung Galaxy tablet some time ago.

As well as the suspended prison sentence, Lane was also sentenced to a four-month home curfew from 7pm to 7am and must also pay a £100 surcharges and £900 costs.

Detective Constable John Whitworth said: “The police and the courts take false reports very seriously. They waste valuable police time and resources and, in this case, could have led to innocent people being arrested.”
