Woman drug-addict locked in custody after falling homeless

But she has been warned that she is likely to stay in prison after admitting an offence of robbery in the village of Carlton-in-Lindrick..

Carole Burgess, formerly of Doncaster, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court accused of robbing a woman of her handbag and its contents .

The 27-year-old Burgess pleaded guilty to the robbery, which is said to have taken place on Windsor Gardens on Monday, February 8.

However, her case had to be adjourned because she had not turned up for appointments with probation officers, who were scheduled to prepare a pre-sentence report on her.

And it was agreed that as she had become homeless, she should be held in custody until her sentencing hearing on Thursday, June 2.

“She says she never received a letter about the appointments,” said Burgess’s barrister, James Horne, mitigating.

“Her former address at Elm Road in Auckley has now broken down, and she has been sleeping rough in the course of the past week .

“The root cause of all her offending is drug-addiction. She is currently the subject of a drug rehabilitation requirement (DRR), so it would assist the court to find out the progress she is making with this.”

Judge James Sampson told Burgess: “You should prepare yourself for a custodial sentence, which is highly likely. But we need to find out more about your background and how you are doing with the DRR.

“You are effectively homeless and there is no place for you to go, so you will be remanded in custody. It is in your interests to co-operate with the probation service.”
