Woman dies in M1 crash

A WOMAN died when her car left the M1 motorway half a mile south of junction 31 yesterday morning (Sunday 8th April).

Police are appealing for witnesses who saw the silver Vauxhall Corsa which was travelling northbound at around 5.40am.

It seems the driver lost control and the car left the carriageway to the nearside, crossing the hard shoulder, sliding down a banking and hitting trees before ending up on its roof.

The driver, a 52-year-old Hartlepool woman, died from head and chest injuries.

A passenger, a 40-year-old Scottish man, escaped with minor cuts and bruises and was treated at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

Anyone with information about the incident should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 239 of Sunday 8th April 2012.
