They attended the scene to extinguish the blaze after it broke out around 4.15am.

The door and shutter were broken and the TV aerial was also damaged.

Shop manager Pamela Squires, who has worked at the shop for over 20 years, said she was shocked to hear what had happened.

“It’s really upsetting, but I know it’ll be more upsetting when I go in,” she said.

“We are waiting to move to new premises on Edinburgh Road in the next four or five weeks, so we don’t know what will happen to this shop here.”

A police spokesman said: “It is unclear if anything was stolen in the incident and forensic examinations are due to be carried out at the scene today.”

“A joint investigation by Notts Police and Notts Fire and Rescue Service is underway and our enquiries are ongoing.”

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
