Who drops out if Colton Fretter returns to Sheffield Steelers on Saturday?

Sheffield Steelers could go from having too few players to one over-the-limit this weekend.

Colton Fretter’s impending return means the fourth-placed side will have 15 imports - Elite League teams are only allowed to play 14.

Coach Paul Thompson resisted the temptation to allow Fretter to return from injury midweek, against Edinburgh Capitals, although he has been training hard for the past few days and has shown no ill effects. But the club is now confident that Fretter’s return will be relatively risk-free - he has been out since a 2-5 loss at Milton Keynes at the end of January.

Fretter is a bullish, canny operator who Steelers can count on for a point a game.

He’s been missed and if he passes his last fitness checks, someone else will have to sit Saturday’s home game against Guildford Flames out.

Steelers’ 7-2 win over Edinburgh Capitals put them back in fourth place.

On the same night, Flames were beaten 2-5 at home by Cardiff Devils, who are nine points clear of second place Belfast Giants, with a game in hand.
