West Stockwith: Trust encourages people to explore hidden waterway gems

Families are being encouraged to rediscover their local canal as part of a drive by national waterways charity the Canal & River Trust to get more people to explore the hidden gems on their doorstep.

As part of the initiative, the Trust is organising a weekend of fun activities at West Stockwith on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September to give local people the chance to find out more about the wide variety of things that they can see and do on and around their local canal or river.

The event is being organised in partnership between the Trust, Chesterfield Canal Trust, West Stockwith Yacht Club and the Waterfront Inn.

The point where the Chesterfield Canal meets the tidal River Trent, West Stockwith is a popular waterside destination and there will be lots of things for people to see and do on the day, including a range of traditional narrowboats moored in the historic canal basin and trip boats and even waterskiing demonstrations.

There will also be plenty for those firmly rooted on dry land to enjoy with a range of stands and demonstrations, live music and guided wildlife walks. The Saturday will culminate in a beer festival giving people the opportunity to sample a range of local brews.

Danny Brennan, chairman of the East Midlands Waterway Partnership said; “We’re really looking forward to the event, there will be lots going on and it will be great to see so many people exploring all that their local waterways have to offer.”

“Our local waterways are really special hidden gems but this can also mean that people sometimes forget they’re there.”

“We’re really passionate about the waterways. The more that people living locally know about the waterways, the more they’ll want to rediscover all the fun and opportunities that our canals and rivers offer.”
