The district is one of only 11 areas across the country to benefit from the Government-backed opportunity.

The Right to Build scheme aims to support people looking to build their own homes get started.

Leader of West Lindsey District Council, Coun Jeff Summers said: “We are delighted to have been selected as a vanguard authority to help local people looking to design and build their own homes.”

“We are keen to support people and have now set up a database for people to register their interest in taking on a custom build project.”

“This will help identify people wanting to build their dream home and bring them together with landowners and developers, who can provide the land and skills required to make projects become a reality.”

“If you have dreamt of building your own home, customised to suit you and your lifestyle, then now is the time to act.”

Custom build housing makes up about one in every 10 new homes built across England and although it plays a key part in delivering new housing this is much lower than other European countries.

The council has supported custom build housing in the area, ranging from single plots up to estates of over 100 houses.

Support is available to people undertaking a custom build project through the council’s building control team.

If you are thinking about undertaking a project then building control can provide a wide range of advice on statutory requirements and regulations of building control and planning, making your project a reality and working with a contractor/developer, on-site service and utility provision and obtaining the correct certification, preparing plans and making your dream a reality and supporting the project from inception to delivery to make your custom build safe and compliant.

The council will be working with a range of other parties to bring forward custom build land within West Lindsey.
