Warning over Halloween hooliganism and bonfire night burglaries

Retford broker Cooke & Mason said the period is a peak time for burglaries and vandalism.

Research from AVIVA last year revealed that the week from 30th October to 5th November generally sees a rise in burglaries.

Steve Grantham, of Cooke & Mason said: “Darker nights and occasions like Halloween or Bonfire Night present too good an opportunity for some criminals to resist.”

“We’d encourage homeowners to be extra cautious to minimise the risk and safeguard their property.”

“No one wants to be a victim of crime but be reassured that theft and malicious damage ought to be covered by your buildings and contents insurance.”

The research showed an average increase in reported burglaries of 26 per cent from 30th October to 5th November during this period compared with the weekly average for the rest of the year.

Aviva data shows a 28 per cent increase in burglary claims on Bonfire Night, making it the worst night of the year for break-ins.

Halloween also presents another threat to homeowners.

Ten years of Aviva claims data shows a rise of 150 per cent in malicious damage claims to the home, with damage to cars rising by 50 per cent and car thefts also increasing by 20 per cent.

Common Halloween claims include smashed windows, vandalism to vehicles and damage to garden property.
