Jude Homer, who is just six, competed in his first UK Cup Stacking championships recently - a growing sport in which participants are timed at how long it takes them to stack plastic purpose-made cups into various sequences.

And being the youngest from 47 competitors, stacking speedster Jude, of Windermere Close, Mansfield Woodhouse, completed each of his three routines in a matter of seconds.

His times have now been sent to America where his father, Melvyn, is hoping they will be confirmed as world records for his age.

“He picked it up from Youtube, and he can practice for hours,” said Melvyn.

“I’ve tried to do it with him but I can’t keep up!”

And having caught the eye during the recent championships in Stevenage, Nettleworth Infant pupil Jude has now been invited to the European Championships in Spain in May.

Cupstacking, also known as sport stacking or speed stacking, was recognised as a sport in 2005 with the governing body, the WSSA (World Sport Stacking Association) setting the rules.

Players stack cups in predetermined sequences, competing against the clock or another player.

The sport has become popular in America and interest on this side the Atlantic is continuing to grow.

“It’s a sport that improves hand to eye co-ordination, and it beginning to get more exposure over here,” said Melvyn Homer.
