An elderly couple were asleep in their home when the car ploughed through their garden wall.

Police have since said that a man has been summoned to appear court after he failed to stop, had no driving licence or insurance.

An eye witness told the Guardian that three police cars, a fire engine and an ambulance all attended the scene on Sitwell Road at 12.30am.

The black Volkswagen Passat caused the wall to crumble and a set of conifers were also severely damaged.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “I was just about to nod off when I heard a loud screech.

“It was like something out of a film.

“My wife was scared to death.

“I thought it was coming towards my house, I was thinking ‘oh my god what has happened’.”

The elderly couple were not injured, but were ‘shook up’.

Neighbours watched on in shock and a recovery truck later took the car away, with the drama not ending until 4.30am.

Fire chiefs said that no equipment was used.

“The front end of the car was smashed to bits and had a lot of scratches,” the neighbour added.

People from the end of the street heard what happened, it must have been really loud.”
