The 40-second clips – which have been put together to help combat the extra risks that develop during the festive period – will focus on things such as cooking safely, checking Christmas lights and the importance of night-time routines.

Each one features the service’s well-known mascot Welephant, as well as staff from a number of different departments, with some of the videos also covering things such as testing smoke alarms and being careful around open water.

Matt Reavill, the service’s community safety manager, said: “We really do hope people have a fantastic Christmas and thoroughly enjoy the festive period, however we are very much aware that extra hazards do surface during this time of year and we don’t want firefighters to have to gatecrash anybody’s parties.

“This is why we have put together these videos that we hope will encourage people to take a number of small steps over Christmas that will help to keep them safe from fire and other dangers.”

There will be a total of 12 short videos released over the 12 days of Christmas and the service hopes that people will not only take on board the safety advice but also share the videos with their friends, neighbours and families.

Matt added: “Our goal is for as many people as possible to watch these videos from every corner of Nottinghamshire and I would ask people to look out for them, watch them and then also please share them with others.

“We really do need everybody to get involved and help us out.

“It only takes a second to hit the share button on Facebook, to retweet something on Twitter or to simply show the clips to somebody else, however it genuinely could save somebody’s life.

“That really has got to be the best present you could ever give – and it doesn’t cost a penny!”

The first of the Christmas safety videos, which features not only Welephant but some of his close friends too, will be released on the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service Facebook page this Saturday.

The last video will be aired on Christmas Eve – Thursday, December 24 – and the service’s risk reduction officer Louise Robinson, who has worked on the videos alongside Matt, said they are definitely not to be missed.

“The warnings and safety advice in each of these clips is vital and could save somebody’s life, however we also have a number of guest appearances that make them extra special,” she added.

“Firefighters, officers and staff from across the service have been involved in the 12 mini-productions and there are some real great moments in them that we hope will put a smile on people’s faces and help to keep them safe.”
