Expectation levels have soared at Hillsborough following their superb results in 2016, leading to some fans dreaming of a top-two finish.

But Carvalhal, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s clash at Preston North End, is staying grounded.

“We are not thinking about where we will be in May,” he said. “We are thinking where we will be after Saturday.

“We don’t want to put expectations on nobody. To win something, we must run and fight a lot in this competition and we don’t want to lose our focus. We have to focus on one step at a time.

“There are better teams in the competition than us. Middlesbrough, Hull, Burnley, Brighton and Derby are very strong. When we have played against those sides, we haven’t beaten them.”

Glenn Loovens (groin) and Sam Hutchinson (knee) are pushing for first-team recalls.
