People came out of office blocks and many passers-by stopped to watch the protest outside the city council building on Station Street as the group, led by Mickey Summers, played the classic 1979 track, but changed the lyrics to ‘Hey paedos! Leave those kids alone!’.

Mickey, originally from Froest Town and who spent four years in council-run homes, says he was just one of many victims of abuse, and even witnessed others, some with serious learning difficulties, being raped.

Around 30 people joined the ‘funeral procession’ on Wednesday morning, in which a coffin was carried along the street.

Most of the protestors dressed in black and carried pickets calling for the truth to out.

When they reached the city council building, they remained outside chanting through a megaphone, calling for Coun Jon Collins, leader of the council, to resign.

A number of PCSOs were deployed to the council building make sure it passed off peacefully.

Mickey told Chad: “We got a lot of attention with this protest, but we’re not going to stop there.

“We want nothing short of a public inquiry.

“We are going to keep on going with this until we get the truth.

“This is not about me, there’s probably over 100 victims and this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Mickey told Chad recently that his childhood records could provide evidence of abuse, but was told that his documents were destroyed.

He claims they were deliberately destroyed by either the city or county councils - who have both held the documents.

He also says the police failed to carry out an effective investigation.

Mickey is calling for other victims to contact Chad on 01623 450303, anonymously if they so wish, and have their contact details passed on to the campaigners.

A joint statement issued by Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire Conty Council said: “We have already explained to Mr Summers that we have been unable to locate any of his files. The information we have is that his child care file was destroyed in 1978. “We have met with Mr Summers and apologised to him that this is the case.”
