VIDEO: Fire at Bilsthorpe factory finally put out

Six crews attended the blaze at the disused egg factory on Belle Eau Park, Kirklington Road, after the building became engulfed in flames at around 2.30am.

Teams from the Mansfield, Ashfield, Edwinstowe, Blidworth, Bingham and Arnold stations were called to the two-storey building that is approximately 120m x 80m.

A water bowser, a high volume pump and an aerial ladder platform were used to dampen the flames and a command support unit was sent out.

The stop message was received at 12.45 this afternoon.

Station manager, Damien West, who was incident commander on the scene, said: “The building has been totally destroyed by the fire and this incident has really shown the potential devastation that fire can cause, to both businesses and homes, and I would just like to urge people to make sure they take precautions against fire wherever possible.”

A man who lives two doors down from the factory described it as an ‘inferno’.

He said: “At first I thought it would have been a controlled fire - but then I realised the whole lot was in flames. Smoke was everywhere.”

Nearby residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed because of the heavy smoke and Kirklington Road was closed off to all traffic.

Police and fire investigators are still trying to determine whether or not the fire should be treated as suspicious.

The incident has now been downscaled and three fire engines are still on the site damping down the area.
