Tia Smallwood has spent the last six months growing her locks after suggesting to her mum that she did something to help children less fortunate.

Last week, the eight-year-old raised more than £1,700 for Children in Need when she finally had her hair shaved.

The Harthill Primary pupil also donated her hair to the Little Princess trust, which provides real hair wigs for children suffering from hair loss.

Tia’s mum Karen, of Falcon Way, Dinnington, said: “We were driving when she said ‘mum I want to shave my hair of to raise money for children who are ill and need it’.”

“We’ve been planning it six months since then and have been on a countdown.”

“I had conversations with her since then to check she was okay about what she was doing. She has been very determined and said ‘no I am doing it’.”

Karen said that Tia is adapting well to her new hair style, and it using it as an opportunity to display an array of hats that she owns.

“She’s been fine with it,” added Karen.

“I went out and bought her lots of hats and she chooses a different hat to wear each day.”

Karen added that money has been come in from across the community.

“Everybody has been fantastic. I can’t believe how generous they have been,” she said.
