Just days after arriving from Premier League side Watford, left-back Pudil and midfielder Abdi made their first Wednesday outings in Sunday’s friendly against Port Vale. Abdi showed good footwork after coming on as a second half substitute, capping an impressive debut with a goal.

Carvalhal told The Star: “I wanted to bring them in for a long time. Since the beginning (of the summer). They were our first options for the positions.”

The Portuguese head coach has given a detailed insight into the qualities potential new players must possess.

“We fight a lot to bring in the players that we have at the moment,” he stated. “It is not easy in the Championship.

“We don’t like to make mistakes with the players who we bring to the club. We analyse the players over a lot of games, their personality also and the little details.

“I think we are doing well in the players that we bring to Sheffield Wednesday.”

Carvalhal said he watched one of the club’s transfer targets in action a fortnight ago but called off their pursuit as he was unimpressed with their attitude.

“He lost the ball and didn’t run back and another time he put his arms up to a colleague so I said ‘I don’t want this player,’” said Carvalhal. “It is not this kind of player we want even if they have very good ability.
