Video: Councillor outlines new parking restrictions proposed for outside Worksop school

For several years some parents picking children up from Worksop Priory C of E Primary have caused a parking nightmare for local residents.

They regularly park anywhere along Holles Street, blocking in residents and parking in their private parking spaces, especially at school start and finish times.

Some even park across the entrance to Holles Court Short Breaks Service, blocking access for emergency services and residents.

But following years of lobbying by residents and the school, new meaures look set to be introduced.

Notts County Council wants to put double yellow lines along New Holles Court, Holles Street and part of Dennis Street and Newgate Street.

There will also be new ‘no stopping’ markings outside the school in opertaion on weekdays between 8.30am and 4.30pm, during term time.

A consultation about the plans is currently underway, but if no objections are received then work could begin within weeks.

Coun Kevin Greaves, chairman of the county council’s transport and highways committee, said: “I am hoping that these measures will make it safer for children because at the moment they are running between cars and provide access for residents and to Holles Court Short Breaks Service.”

Coun Greaves said he had witnessed a fight involving a parent over parking during one visit to the school.

Recently an area of land near the school was made into a car park, but parents continued to park right outside the school.

Headteacher Philip Abbott said: “They are the right thing because they are enforceable and the previous markings haven’t been.”

“We have been lobbying for a number of years, both myself and my predessor, for double yellow lines.”

“My only concern is that the double yellow lines have to be policed and enforced.”
