VIDEO: Cineworld Sheffield welcomes new IMAX with laser
Cineworld in Sheffield will be one of only a handful of venues in the world to house IMAX with laser – a new system which will provide audiences with the sharpest, brightest and most vivid digital images ever, combined with enhanced audio.
Two giant IMAX digital projectors were too big to carry up the stairs at the venue in Valley Centertainment, so they had to be lifted by crane to the roof yesterday to their new home in a projection corridor at the top of the building.

The installation comprises a curved screen measuring a whopping 12.92m by 23.91m – taller than two double decker buses – and will house 548 seats for 2D screenings and 460 seats for 3D screenings.
The IMAX with laser auditorium opens on October 26 and will showcase the latest blockbusters such as SPECTRE and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Cineworld’s general manager Karen Godfrey said: “It’s fantastic to be able to offer the people of Sheffield the very best IMAX experience.

IMAX with laser is part of a major refurbishment at the cinema, which also includes a new 140-seat 4DX screen that will deliver high-tech motion seats and special effects such as wind, fog, bubbles, water, rain and scents.
The cinema will also have a new-look foyer, concession stand, bar, satellite concession stand and 20 refurbished screens.
