The youngsters arrived early in the morning feeling anxious, but most left grinning from ear-to-ear.

Chris Layhe, who achieved three ‘B’ grades and is heading to De Montfort University to study economics, said: “I have done better than I thought. I was only expecting C’s at the most so it is fantastic. Everyone has done really well.”

Charlotte Taylor, who got an A* and two A’s, said: “It is a lot of relief knowing that I have got the grades that I wanted. I have put a lot of hard work in, it is a nice feeling.”

Tutors could be seen congratulating their pupils who they have guided throughout the year.

Maths teacher, Ken Palmer, said: “My tutor group seem to have done well, it is fantastic. Some have had hesitations but it is moments like this that make it worthwhile.”

“Nearly half of pupils have got A*-B in maths and we have had 100 per cent passes in A2 maths.”

Geography teacher, Zoe Bingham, said: “Everybody has passed, with most getting A*-C, which is what we like to see.”

Health and social care teacher, Anna Blackburn, added: “We have had all passes, I am really happy. To see them all excited like this is really lovely.”

AS results also improved, with 56.3 per cent achieving A*-C.

James Parker, who got 2 A’s and a C at AS level, told the Guardian: “It is nice to know that hard work pays off. Everybody seems really happy with the results they have got. It is a big sigh of relief.”

Alice Walker, who achieved full marks in her two AS politics exams, said: “It is amazing, I did not think I would do as well as I did, I cannot believe it.”

Mrs Shea, Head of Post 16 Centre, also had high praise for the teenagers.

She said: “It is an absolute privilege to work with and support our students who are ambitious for their future work tremendously hard and all the staff here are delighted to celebrate their excellent achievements this academic year, which will ensure they are able to fulfil their personal aspirations in life.”
