A burglar made off with presents from underneath her tree and cash was also taken from her home on Dickens Road, Kilton.

Police are now investigating the incident that occurred at around 10pm on Friday 19th December.

Shocked residents and a town church have since rallied round to try give the lady a bit of festive cheer.

Rachel and John Malvern, who attend Oasis Community Church, on Longfellow Drive, said: “People have put some money in and we have bought a nice present and a hamper to put a smile back on her face.”

“It is terrible, it is not fair.”

Mr Malbern, owner of Eco Scooters on Ryton Street, told the Guardian that once members of the church heard about the news, people were quick to come to her help.

“The church is only two streets away, it is like looking after your own,” he said.

The offender is thought to have been wearing a dark hoody with a dark beanie hat on over his hood and a white scarf over the lower half of his mouth. He ran off towards Plantation Hill.

Natasha Cooper, who lives on the same road, wrote on the Guardian Facebook page: “He has taken all of the presents that people have given her.”

“He’s also taken her car keys and locked her in the house. She is petrified to go back in her home.”

Amy Hayes posted: “She’s actually doing really well. The whole community have been amazing. She’s had flowers, gifts, donations. She’s really overwhelmed.”

Emily Stocks wrote: “If there is anything me and my family can do we are more than happy to help her.”
